You have my permission to be lazy.
Life is busy, and sometimes you need a break.
Sometimes, we just want things simple and easy—and there’s no shame in that.

You can meet your need for a break and still meet your dog’s needs at the same time. It doesn’t have to be complicated. There’s no need to go full “dog mom social media influencer” and source a thousand different whole-food ingredients for a treat puzzle.

Most dog food formulas have a wet food equivalent. Take a couple of spoonfuls of that, blend it with water, and it’ll work perfectly in a freeze-and-lick toy. Toss in a couple of treats to give your dog something to work toward—we like freeze-dried beef liver. Or just use a few pieces of yesterday’s leftover chicken breast. If it had seasoning, rinse it off. They don’t need onion, garlic, or salt, and they couldn’t care less if it’s a little soggy. You know they’d eat it covered in dirt if they had the chance!

That’s it—the hard part is done. Pop it in the freezer, and the next time your dog is howling for attention, barking at the mailman, or generally underfoot while you need a break, you’ll be ready. It’ll be low in calories, you won’t have to worry about dietary issues since it’s their regular food, and it’ll keep them happily occupied for at least 20 minutes.

Plus, it’s a lot easier to clean up than peanut butter or squeeze cheese! I used to scrub inside Kongs and lick mats with a toothbrush—what a pain. We like the lay-flat toys (like the PetSafe Chilly Penguin), but if you use a Kong or other toy with a hole, you can plug it with a little beeswax, a piece of kibble, peanut butter, or coconut oil. I’m not a big fan of peanut butter or coconut oil overall since they’re so high in calories, but a tiny bit will get the job done.

It's that time of year 😭 Warm weather means more outdoor play, and insects are thinking the same thing. We are seeing lots of tick nymphs after playing in the European Beach Grass. That plant is invasive, by the way, so all the more reason to support dune restoration to remove it!

Make sure your Adventure Dog is protected with **vet prescribed** flea and tick medication. Vet prescription medication kills parasites on bite, and for ticks this means they don't latch and will fall off, thus limiting exposure to tick borne illnesses. Even better if you get meds with additional heartworm protection! Heartworm is potentially deadly and difficult to treat parasite spread from mosquitos. We know warm weather brings them on too! Talk to your vet about what medication will work best for you 🐾

Sunday Funday SNOWDay!!
Today was the perfect, clear sunny sky for a field trip up towards Horse Mountain. The drive was worth how bonkers the dogs went, rolling and frolicking in the deep drifts. We even ran into one of our client families out with their pup too! It was super cute to see everyone playing in the snow. Kids, adults, and doggos 🥹 Humboldt blesses us with the ability to experience a lil bit of everything climate-wise, and for that, I'm grateful ❤️

We are so lucky to live in such a creative place! Lovely gardens, colorful murals, home made folk art, and victorian houses. Yesterday Hippo and I saw 4 different varieties of passionflower 🏵

New additions and old favorites 🐾

Charly and I are just getting to know each other, and he can be very shy. His folks say he won't take any treat from anyone, anywhere. I have a soft spot for the shy guys, so I experimented with different rewards, and I feel like we are making some great progress!

Is your pupper not a fan of treats, and this is holding your training back? Here are a few tips:

1) Different environment

More often than not, it's stress related. Calm, familiar, safe, low stimulation environments increase focus and also decrease anxiety from hyper vigilance. Nobody eats in fight or flight mode

2) Different treats

Biscuits and dog cookies may not be enticing enough.

• Freeze dried single ingredient protein such as chicken breast, beef liver
• Creamy treats. I'm using a creamy tube of mackerel in the photo
• Fresh Pet - a pet food in the frozen/refrigerated section that comes in little pieces or a tube you can cut up
• Small pieces of cheese - a classic
• Small pieces of hot dog - another classic
• Small dried whole fish - most commonly these are herring, anchovies, or sprat. No salt!
• Home-made boiled chicken breast. No salt, no seasoning.

3) Use a different reward

Pay attention to your dogs' "love language." Do they always ask for pets and attention? Do they live to chase a ball or tug a toy? Your dog has unique preferences, and you can use anything they love as a reward. Get creative.

Charly will eat treats from his bowl. Tossing a cookie in his food bowl as a training reward works just as well as delivering the treat from your hand. There are also remote operated treat dispensers, puzzle treat toys, and load-and-toss treat toys. These give a bonus of a lil extra excitement.

4) Be patient

Sometimes, we just don't know if there was a past experience that's making pups resistant to taking treats or wanting to play. Charly is a rescue. His history is unknown. He could have had to compete with other dogs for scraps, resulting in getting snapped at around food. He could have been yelled at for eating anything outside of his designated food bowl. Whatever the case, he may just need some extra time to get comfy having a snack 💜

Dogs that don't learn to settle down or don't have the opportunity to take breaks from play are likely to become overly stimulated and exhibit behavior issues such as reactive barking and acting out in frustration. Think about the toddler who missed their nap - cranky, irritable, whiny, and prone to tantrums. Human child daycare has naptime, and doggies in daycare definitely benefit from it, too!

Younger dogs are a lot more likely to not have a good "off" switch and may need help learning to settle down. Again, the toddler analogy is really applicable. Sometimes, they just are so excited about what's going on around them that they fight their body's sleep signals in order to stay awake.

For dogs in traditional doggy daycare settings, there may not be guidance in relaxation, taking play breaks, or play manners / respecting other dogs' boundaries. If you find that your dog has a tough time in large play groups and becomes overwhelmed, our small-scale playgroup daycare and adventure walks might be a good alternative! By keeping it small, we can give pups lots of 1:1 attention and guidance in positive behaviors, all without the use of punishment. We've had lots of positive feedback from our regulars about behavior improvements at home, and we also offer 1:1 training for dog guardians so they can continue reinforcing that progress!

If you find that your dog has a tough time in large play groups and becomes overwhelmed, our small-scale playgroup daycare and adventure walks might be a good alternative! By keeping it small, we can give pups lots of 1:1 attention and guidance in positive behaviors, all without the use of punishment. We've had lots of positive feedback from our regulars about behavior improvements at home, and we also offer 1:1 training for dog guardians so they can continue reinforcing that progress!

Meet Louis! Our newest daycare addition, he had a blast on the trail with us today!

Our books are open for 2023 holiday travel season! We have pet boarding and drop-in care availability starting Oct 14th - January 8th. NEW CLIENTS NOW BEING ACCEPTED!

We only board a few dogs at a time in our home-based, cage-free space, so we do book up fast. Does your pup take meds, have special dietary needs, or prefer sleeping with a cuddly human in bed? No problem! If your doggo has never boarded with us before, we do require a meet and greet and 2 daycare days to get them comfy with our space and routines, so planning ahead is crucial!

We also have a secure, dedicated cat/small animal boarding room that only books one family at a time. No dogs or other animals will have access to this space. Your kitty will free-roam their room and enjoy a heated cat perch, large picture window with a view of active bird feeders, tall cat tree, plenty of scratch posts and toys, and lots of dark places to hide.

Do your pets prefer to be home-bodies? We can care for them too! Drop-in care, dog walking, and yard pet waste pickup is available at your home. We have experience caring for a wide array of critters - fish, rodents, poultry, reptiles, amphibians, and even exotics such as ferrets. At this time, we are only servicing Eureka and outlying areas for the holiday season, but expanded service will hopefully be available again soon.

Dog adventure jams with the daycare crew! 🐾

We've been doing crate training work on our boys. We choose to not crate at night or when we leave them home, but crate training is important for so many other reasons. Evacuations, unplanned emergencies, air travel, overnight vet visits. The last thing I want is my buds to be stressed out during any of these situations.

Flicker, our 7 year old, took to it very quickly. Omen, on the other hand, can be anxious of new objects. He would hardly come near the crate to start with. Having it in the living room helped to normalize it, but he still refused to go inside. Strange dark places where you can't see what's around you- who wouldn't be anxious, right? Well, it took some time, but today we got there! I think this will help him tackle the tunnel at dog agility, too

Having a solid relationship built on trust gives them confidence I won't put them into a harmful situation. Having patience while Omen felt uneasy at first was critical. Following Force Free ethos means I will never force my dogs into a crate or any other situation they are unsure of. Training them is really just guiding them to make the choice on their own, then reinforcing that choice with all the praise and rewards. Never forcing them builds that trust in me all the more.

Now, I will work on duration in the crate with me present. Then to working on duration in the crate without me present. We've already done a lot of the base work on this. Omen and Flicker both are pros with going to a bed, laying down, staying, and continuing to stay when I leave the room and move about the house. I anticipate transitioning these skills into the crate very easily!

Hippo was such a treat to walk! Have you ever seen a bigger doggy grin??

We started out with just an average walk down the street, but he was just bursting with energy. We bee-lined it to the neighborhood park and had some zoomies on the long line to finish it out. Structured walks and focusing on leash manners is important, but I like to assess what is going to be the most enriching for the dog in front of me during the time we have. Letting them wild-out is not without its training benefits - It offers the opportunity to work on reinforcing calm protocols after some highly stimulating play. Hippo was an absolute darling! I can't wait to see him again 💜

Are you a mossy tree squirrel kinda person? Or a sandy beach crab? In Humboldt, we are lucky to have the best of both worlds, but I'm gonna be honest. I much prefer the Redwoods. Omen, on the other hand, absolutely loves chase and ambush games in the Dunes. For that reason, I thought I'd change it up from our normal walk spot. I'm glad I did - it was a super enjoyable walk!

I edited this video quite a bit less than I usually do, so you can have a more authentic "taking the pack on an adventure walk" experience. 🐾

Book me to regularly walk your bud and I'll get them started with a strong base of loose leash skills - all without the use of painful choke chains or prong collars. Off-Leash Adventure Time!
After spending some time cultivating a trusting relationship with your pup and reinforcing their recall skills, we can take them on one of our pack style off-leash adventures! We only utilize positive reinforcement and force free methods to achieve these goals - no prong collars, choke chains, or e-collars/shock collars. Some tools we do use: single ingredient freeze dried beef or chicken treats for those with sensitive tummies, collars with bells to warn wildlife, Y - harnesses with front and back points of leash attachment for full range of leg motion and quick leash connectivity, Tractive GPS units for peace of mind, and 30 foot long leads for our more rambunctious puppers who may not be ready for complete freedom. Our off-leash adventure locations are away from roads and with minimal risk of encountering other dogs or people.

Omen is a German Shephard, Cattle Dog mix. Naturally, he's the shy one. He likes climbing high and surveying the landscape, games of chase, and learning new tricks.
